He must be found, and stopped.

"The world Kirstein creates is captivating." -- Publisher's Weekly
“If you haven’t read Kirstein’s Steerswoman books I envy you the chance to read them now for the first time.... I think they have a very good claim to be my favorite thing still being written. […] If you like science, and if you like watching someone work out mysteries, and if you like detailed weird alien worlds and human cultures, if really good prose appeals... you’re really in luck.” — Jo Walton, Hugo and Nebula Awards winner, author of Among Others and Farthing.
"[Kirstein] walks the tightrope between fantasy and science fiction with precision and grace... [her] compassion for even minor characters is evident on every page, and her prose is measured and alluring without being overworked." -- Damien Broderick & Paul Di Filippo, in Science Fiction The 101 Best Novels 1985-2010
"Kirstein's striking portrait of an innovative woman who is scientist, judge, historian, and adventurer makes for a good, thought-provoking read." -- Publisher's Weekly
The Language of Power Steerswoman Series Book 4 eBook Rosemary Kirstein
This, the fourth book in the series thus far, brings together the hints that have added up in the earlier volumes regarding the nature of the world that serves as background, plot device, and subject of the series. The first two books were almost pure fantasy writing (and superb fantasy writing at that), with hints directing the reader towards something additional. Books three and four are transitional, with aspects of the fantasy world being shown to be actually science fiction, and in particular "lost colony " science fiction. That much can said without giving away material that would destroy the story. Probably, a complete synopsis could be given without destroying the story (although only by the author, as the last two books aren't out yet), because even with such a synopsis in hand the books would be impossible to put down, due to the quality of the writing.
The story-telling, the characterization, and the world-building are all superb. The descriptive writing has me quoting short sections to family and friends, just to share the poetic turn of phrase.
I'm torn. I am not happy that she hasn't finished the series yet, as I want to keep reading-- I have come to care about the characters. I am thrilled that she's still writing more, because I care about the characters.
Do not start reading with this book, obviously, but if you haven't read these, go back to the beginning of the series and start them for the first time. I envy you.

The Language of Power Steerswoman Series Book 4 eBook Rosemary Kirstein Reviews
This book returns us to the "main game" or so it felt to me. There is a re-engagement with previous characters that is really nicely done with some great leads to the next book in the series without feeling underdone. I loved the interaction between the characters and the way the underlying theme was progressed. What is the worst part about finishing this book? The fact that book 5 hasn't been written. From the author's website I can understand why this hasn't yet occurred. Fingers crossed that it does get written at some point in the future because this series is truly a wonderful thing.
OK, I got REALLY sucked into this world and the Big Mystery. Yeah, some of the characters are a little too goody goody. But it's a great ride. My pet peeve, this is the last book in the series but not the end of the series. This is way worse than the waiting period for Robert Jordan (He was good for one book a year.). Rosemary Kirstein goes YEARS between books.
At least it seems so. Having to wait for the next book in this series is going to be an agony. I will have to go read some Ursula K. LeGuin in order to get my "excellent fantasy" fix while I wait, gently buzzing.
Rosemary Kirsten is a writer of the first calibre. Rosemary weaves a magical web of the history of the Steerswoman Rowan's involvement in the salvation and enlightenment of the people of her world from the whims of power hungry "wizards". The complexity and the beauty of the web draws you ever deeper towards the center where it dawns on you that there is much more to this story than what you have been told. Now you're captured and must simply lay quietly, gently buzzing, trying to gain the attention of the weaver of this spell to please hurry, complete the spell and release you.
I love the Steerswoman series, a well-crafted merging of fantasy and science fiction with strong, likeable characters and vivid world-building. The storytelling in this book is not too fast paced, maybe once I felt it needed a bit of a nudge, but overall moves along enjoyably. It's smart, female-driven, and clever. I'm not going to give a synopsis or overview; you can read that elsewhere.
I eagerly await the next book in the series!
This is a great series however its a series and there are two books left to go so bumped down from a 5 to a 4 star review. I found myself loving the series but very disappointed I could not reach the end.....shades of game of thrones.....Read these and you will be hooked but like me possibly disappointed that the series is still in progress. One of the better written books I have read this year and it really had me hooked. This genre, part fantasy and part SF is not in my normally in my wheel house but this is the exception. Lots of nice unexpected twists and no character is safe but two. Author get those last two books out....Now
Nice to have a series with a female protagonist that isn't about girl empowerment, feckless romance, teen angst, vampires or other-world monsters, and similar much over-used themes. The power of this series is in the careful unfolding of perspectives on and understanding of the world in which the Steerswoman lives. You take the mental journey with her, as much as the physical adventure. Start with the first book, don't just jump in in the middle of the series. Take your time appreciating how the mystery of this world unfolds. Fantasy lovers will like this series, although it isn't actually in the fantasy genre. For those who like a heroine who is intelligent, brave, determined and compassionate, I think you will enjoy making the acquaintance of the Steerwoman very much.
My only regret is that there is as yet no Book 5!
I was drawn into this series by the insatiable, unapologetic curiosity of the steerswoman, the sense of empathy and openness that comes from travelling the world and seeing everything and more, and the compelling post-apocalyptic mystery that drives our steerswoman to push herself beyond her limits, book after book, and discovered not only clues to the mystery, but also strengths within herself and her companions that she could never have imagined.
This is also the most perfectly realized feminist post-apocalyptic (dis)topia I have ever had the pleasure to encounter. Every position in society in this series is held by both men and women (mostly equally, except in the case of the steerswomen) - sailors, soldiers, blacksmiths, cooks, farmers. Everyone has equal access, equal respect regardless of gender. AND IT'S NEVER EVEN MENTIONED! Complete equality and the author never rubs your nose in it, never even points it out.
